Lawyers React to Nusrat Murder Verdict and Media Trial Concerns
Defense counsels Mohammad Tajul Islam and Mohammad Shishir Monir have addressed the High Court verdict in the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case. They shared their reactions regarding the judicial outcome, media trials, and the significance of 164 statements.
In Dhaka, defense lawyers Mohammad Tajul Islam and Mohammad Shishir Monir have spoken to journalists regarding the recent High Court verdict in the sensational murder case of madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi from Sonagazi, Feni. The lawyers addressed media representatives on August 24, 2026, sharing their official reactions to the judicial outcome, the implications of media trials, and matters concerning statements recorded under section 164.
The legal proceedings centered around the High Court's review of the lower court judgment regarding the 16 individuals who had previously received death sentences. According to the court's decision, 10 out of the 16 convicted appellants have been completely acquitted of the charges against them. This significant reduction leaves only six individuals whose sentences were upheld or modified by the High Court bench.
Among the remaining six defendants whose convictions were sustained, the court upheld the death penalty for two individuals. Meanwhile, the capital punishment for the other four defendants was commuted by the court, reducing their legal penalties to life imprisonment instead.
During their briefing with journalists in Dhaka, defense counsel Mohammad Tajul Islam raised concerns about public perception and legal pressures. He stated that a sensitive murder case, or indeed any murder case, often becomes overly sensitive through extensive promotional campaigns and widespread coverage conducted by the media.
Adding to these observations, defense lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir discussed the severe impact of intense public scrutiny on judicial officers. He stated that when a criminal case undergoes excessive media trials, it frequently becomes difficult for judges in the lower courts to deliver correct and impartial decisions.
The press briefing provided a detailed look into the defense perspective following the High Court's review of the lower court verdict. Both lawyers emphasized the challenges posed by external pressures while outlining the final legal outcomes for the sixteen individuals originally sentenced in the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder trial.
