King's Fund: England Adult Obesity Rates Double to 30% Record High

A new analysis from the King's Fund reveals that adult obesity rates in England have doubled from 15 percent in 1993 to a record-breaking 30 percent in 2024. The comprehensive report highlights a rapidly worsening health crisis driven by successive policy failures over the past three decades.

A stark new analysis published by the King's Fund on 7 August 2026 has revealed that adult obesity rates in England have doubled over a thirty-year period, surging from 15 percent in 1993 to a record high of 30 percent in 2024. According to the data compiled by the health think tank, this dramatic escalation means that a staggering 14 million adults are now classified as obese across England. The report emphasizes that if the national obesity rates had remained at the levels recorded in 1993, there would currently be seven million fewer adults living with the condition today.

The financial toll of this escalating public health crisis is immense, placing a crushing burden on both the national economy and the health service. The King's Fund analysis points out that obesity and being overweight currently cost the wider UK economy approximately £126 billion per year. Furthermore, the condition costs the National Health Service (NHS) a staggering £12 billion annually, which accounts for roughly seven percent of the health service's total annual budget.

The analysis highlights that obesity rates are rising at their fastest pace among the youngest demographic of adults in England. Among 16-to-24 year-olds, 18 percent are now classified as obese or severely obese in 2024, a dramatic escalation compared to just six percent in 1993. This surge means there are now one million young adults living with obesity in England, representing 700,000 more individuals than if the rates had not risen over the decades.

Dave Buck of the King's Fund described the findings as "clearly worrying" and stated that successive administrations have "talked the talk, but not sufficiently walked the walk." Buck noted that the analysis demonstrates the scale of the failure to take the necessary action on tackling this obesity timebomb, noting that it has become far easier for citizens to over-consume or consume in ways that add to their weight. Over the past three decades, a total of 14 separate obesity strategies have been launched by various political figures, including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson, yet the numbers have continued to climb.

Efforts to curb the crisis have spanned multiple measures, including a UK-wide levy on high-sugar soft drinks introduced in 2018, and a ban on junk food advertising before 21:00 on television and at any time online implemented by the Labour government in January 2026. Medical interventions are also strictly regulated, as patients currently require a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 alongside at least one pre-existing weight-related health condition to qualify for the drug Wegovy on the NHS. Addressing the reliance on pharmaceutical solutions, Prof Sir Chris Whitty warned that it would be a 'societal failure' if medicating people for life was our only answer to obesity.
