Periods of hot weather can affect anyone, but vulnerable groups run a greater risk of serious harm during high-temperature events across the United Kingdom. While warm weather is often welcomed, extreme heat poses substantial physiological challenges that health authorities warn should not be underestimated. The UK Health Security Agency and the NHS closely monitor these conditions to provide guidance and protect the public from the dangers associated with rising temperatures.

As the body gets hotter, blood vessels open up, lowering blood pressure and making the heart work harder to maintain normal circulation. This cardiovascular strain can be particularly dangerous for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. At the same time, sweating leads to the loss of essential fluids and salt from the body, which can ultimately lead to heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses if precautions are not strictly followed.

The UK Health Security Agency recommends looking out for older people, those with underlying health conditions, and those who live alone, as these groups are disproportionately affected by high temperatures. Ensuring that vulnerable neighbours, friends, and family members are checked upon during spells of hot weather is a vital part of community-level protection and preventative healthcare across the country.

The dangers posed by extreme heat are underscored by historical mortality data compiled by health authorities. During 2022, there were an estimated 2,985 excess deaths as a result of the heat in England alone. Furthermore, statistical tracking across recent years demonstrates a persistent threat, with 1,311 heat-associated deaths recorded during the summer of 2024 and 1,504 heat-associated deaths documented during the summer of 2025.

Climatic extremes in the UK have reached unprecedented levels in recent years, reinforcing the need for continuous vigilance and adherence to health guidance. The highest recorded temperature in England reached a staggering 40.3C, while individual physiological tracking notes that core body temperatures can reach up to 37C and ambient temperatures can climb as high as 40C during severe heatwaves.

Public health messaging consistently emphasizes preventative measures, particularly during peak sun hours between 11:00 and 15:00, and during the first 24 hours of a heatwave when the body is most vulnerable. With death rates rising notably when temperatures cross the 25C to 26C threshold, authorities continue to urge caution, adequate hydration, and appropriate recovery periods of up to 30 minutes to mitigate the profound risks associated with hot weather.
