Jahangirnagar University Fines 20 Students 615,000 Taka Over Ragging

Jahangirnagar University has taken strict disciplinary action against campus ragging by penalizing a total of 20 students across two separate academic departments. According to the university administration, the offenders have been collectively fined an amount of 6,15,000 taka for their involvement in systematic hazing activities targeting newer batches of students.

The administrative measures were formally announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, through two separate official orders signed by the university's acting registrar, Dr. ABM Azizur Rahman. The enforcement of these penalties stems directly from the decisions and recommendations adopted during a special meeting of the university syndicate held earlier on September 13.

A major portion of the disciplinary action is directed at the physics department, where eight students have been ordered to pay a combined fine of 3,65,000 taka. This specific punishment follows a confirmed ragging incident that took place late at night on July 20, starting from 10:00 PM and continuing until 3:00 AM, during which students from the 2024–2025 academic session targeted junior students of the 2025–2026 session.

Similarly, the history department has faced administrative penalties involving 12 of its students, who have been fined a total of 2,50,000 taka. Official records indicate that these students were found responsible for subjecting 13 students from the 2025–2026 academic session to ragging during an incident on July 3, which occurred between 11:00 PM and 2:00 AM.

As part of the strict enforcement measures tied to the syndicate's ruling, the university administration has stated that all 20 fined students are barred from participating in their ongoing and upcoming scheduled examinations. This academic suspension will remain actively in place until each of the offenders successfully pays off their designated monetary fine.
