A comprehensive analysis has examined the impact and safety of regular mouthwash use on both oral and overall health. Researchers from the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan, including Dr. Vivek Thumbigere-Math and Dr. Purnima Kumar, have contributed insights to this evaluation. The study context involves thirty-six healthy adults and references a timeline from the year 2020.

According to the analysis, the inside of the mouth hosts a delicate balance of various microorganisms. Therapeutic mouthwashes contain active ingredients designed to help control bacteria. However, specific formulations, such as mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine, have the potential to alter the microbiome of saliva.

Furthermore, certain bacteria residing in the mouth play a crucial role by converting nitrates obtained from food into nitric oxide. The analysis also notes that mouthwashes containing alcohol or peroxide can cause irritation or discomfort in the soft tissues of the mouth.

Addressing the broader context of oral hygiene, Dr. Vivek Thumbigere-Math stated that the primary goal of good oral care is to control harmful bacteria while simultaneously maintaining a balance of beneficial bacteria. This careful equilibrium is essential for sustaining long-term oral health without disrupting the natural microbial ecosystem.

Commenting on the frequency of usage, Dr. Purnima Kumar noted that using mouthwash occasionally, such as once a week or once a month, carries a very low risk of harming oral or overall health. Additionally, Dr. Kumar emphasized that mouthwash is not something that needs to be used every single day for a lifetime, particularly when the product is prescription-based.
