Home Minister's Remarks Ignite Tensions in Parliament

The proceedings of the national parliament turned exceptionally turbulent on August 27 during the very first day of the third session of the thirteenth national parliament. The tense atmosphere erupted specifically over the official responses delivered by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed in the legislature.

The parliamentary confrontation began when Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed addressed a series of questions posed by Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah, who represents the Comilla-4 constituency. The nature and delivery of the minister's answers immediately drew sharp reactions within the parliamentary chamber, escalating into a heated debate among the assembled lawmakers.

Amid the growing commotion and overlapping objections inside the parliament, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed robustly defended his right to speak and be heard by the floor. Addressing the continuous interruptions and challenges from fellow parliamentarians, the minister asserted his position by stating, "If you can stand all day, I can too. If you do not let me speak, then what kind of freedom of speech is this?"

Continuing his sharp defense against the parliamentary pressure during the session, the Home Minister further demanded precision from those questioning his office and statements. Dismissing vague lines of inquiry from the floor, Minister Salahuddin Ahmed explicitly remarked, "Speaking out of thin air will not do. You have to ask specific questions."

The mounting tension on the opening day also drew direct intervention from the leadership of the legislature to maintain order in the house. Addressing the noisy disruptions and back-and-forth remarks echoing across the chamber, the Speaker intervened to remind the parliamentarians of the prevailing political environment, stating, "This is not the era of the Awami League. You are able to criticize the government as you wish."

As the disruptions continued to disrupt the legislative proceedings, the Leader of the Opposition also voiced deep frustration regarding the ongoing interruptions from the floor. Objecting strongly to the continuous background commentary during the official address, the opposition leader protested directly by asking, "Will you give the speech, or will I? If comments are made like this during my speech, it is unseemly."
