On August 21, 2026, authorities in Manikganj recovered the hanging body of a teenage boy named Shihab from a local Shaheed Minar. The recovery of the body from a prominent monument has drawn significant attention to the area, prompting an official response from local law enforcement agencies regarding the circumstances of the incident.
According to verified information, the deceased teenager, Shihab, was employed at the Manikganj bus stand fish market, where he worked by cutting fish for customers. His grandfather, Akram Hossain, shed light on Shihab's daily routine and financial requests prior to the tragedy, noting that the boy had asked for five hundred taka and that his entire life revolved around his work at the market.
Elaborating on his grandson's daily activities, Akram Hossain firmly stated that Shihab had no involvement in any political activities whatsoever. He explained that customers would give fish to Shihab to cut, after which the customers would pay him, allowing the teenager to earn an income and return home without ever engaging in politics.
Further details regarding Shihab's living arrangements were provided by his father, who recalled that the teenager had come to stay at his home during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. According to the father, Shihab had expressed a strong preference for staying in that specific location, remarking that he liked it there and wanted to remain.
Co-workers also corroborated Shihab's dedication to his labor rather than any external affiliations. A coworker named Monir confirmed that Shihab was not associated with any politics, noting that the teenager had taken a Saturday off from work after having worked alongside Monir the previous Friday, only to never return.
Following the recovery of the body, the Bangladesh Police and the Manikganj Sadar police station initiated an investigation into the matter. Police have stated their preliminary assumption is that the incident could be a suicide, though they emphasized that a definitive conclusion can only be reached after the autopsy report is finalized. In connection with the incident, the victim's grandfather, Akram Hossain, has formally filed an unnatural death case.
