Government Clarifies Stance on Cultural Events and Concerts

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeb Rahman addressed journalists during a press conference held at the Secretariat on August 25. The briefing focused on the progress of various activities and initiatives undertaken by the government. During the session, reporters raised specific questions regarding recent incidents in Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj, where local ulema and clerics allegedly obstructed the organization of cultural events.

Responding to these concerns, Minister Andaleeb Rahman made the government's position clear regarding cultural freedom and state policy. He firmly stated that the government of the country does not possess any mindset or policy to create obstacles or disrupt cultural activities and performances. According to the Minister, the state values cultural engagement and ensures that official policies do not deliberately target or restrict such endeavors.

Addressing the frequent cancellation of musical concerts, the Information and Broadcasting Minister explained that such decisions are often driven by logistical or security considerations rather than political interference. He noted that the cancellation of a concert does not automatically imply a lack of cooperation from the government. Rahman elaborated that there could be various factors involved, including specific security concerns that necessitate a review of the event.

Minister Andaleeb Rahman further remarked that whenever a concert is called off, it is important to look at the underlying circumstances rather than jumping to conclusions. He emphasized that it should not be viewed as the direct result of government non-cooperation or objections. Rahman added that authorities would look into specific incidents by communicating with the relevant ministries to ascertain the exact reasons behind the cancellations.

Concluding his remarks on the matter, the Minister reiterated that events may be called off from time to time due to a multitude of reasons. He stressed that it is incorrect to assume that performances are always canceled solely due to someone's objections. Instead, if there is an apprehension of any security risk or threat somewhere, a decision to halt an event might be adopted based on those safety grounds.
