Former Minister Dipu Moni Attends Husband Tawfiq Nawaz's Funeral on Parole

Former minister and Awami League leader Dipu Moni was released on parole for a duration of 12 hours to attend the final rites of her husband, Tawfiq Nawaz. The decision allowed her to briefly leave custody following her detention in connection with various legal cases filed in the wake of the 2024 movement.

Dipu Moni is currently being held at the Munshiganj District Jail as an undertrial prisoner stemming from the post-movement cases. On Thursday morning, security personnel transported her from the Munshiganj facility to Dhaka so she could participate in the funeral proceedings of Tawfiq Nawaz.

The events in Dhaka on Thursday included prayers and final farewells at designated locations before the burial at the Banani Graveyard. Family members, including Dipu Moni's daughter Deepanwita Nawaz, were present to mourn Tawfiq Nawaz alongside relatives, well-wishers, and religious figures such as Maulana Omar Faruk.

Religious services and funeral prayers were conducted at both the Gulshan Azad Mosque and the Banani Graveyard Mosque to honor the deceased. Following the completion of the prayers and final rituals, Tawfiq Nawaz was laid to rest at the Banani Graveyard in Dhaka.

Dipu Moni holds a prominent political lineage within the Awami League, as her father, M.A. Wadud, was recognized as one of the founding members of the political party. After fulfilling her attendance at the funeral and burial proceedings under strict supervision, she was scheduled to return to custody.
