A new waste-to-energy project in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is scheduled to begin production within the next 18 months. The initiative, which is planned to generate 42 megawatts of electricity, represents a significant step forward in municipal waste management and energy production for the capital city.
According to the confirmed project details, the electricity generated from this facility is projected to be integrated into the national grid by August or September of 2028. This timeline outlines the anticipated progression of the energy infrastructure development in the region.
A notable aspect of the arrangement is that the Bangladesh government is not required to make any financial investment in the project. The economic model relies entirely on the operating entities to develop and manage the facilities under established agreements with local authorities.
In addition to energy generation, the scope of the project includes the processing of waste to produce organic fertilizer. Furthermore, the investing enterprise is slated to pay a regular monthly rent to the city corporation for the utilization of the designated landfill site.
Building upon these plans, authorities have also initiated efforts for another related undertaking at the Dhaka South City Corporation landfill. This supplementary initiative involves communicating with the Chinese organization PowerChina to explore generating an additional 40 to 50 megawatts of electricity daily from the accumulated waste at that location.
