Dhaka College Students Demand Cancellation of Politically Influenced Hall Seat Allocations
General students of Dhaka College held a press conference demanding the cancellation of hall seat allocations made through political recommendations. They also called for the construction of new residential halls to resolve the ongoing accommodation crisis.
On August 25, 2026, general students of Dhaka College gathered in front of the Shaheed Minar located on the Dhaka College campus to hold a formal press conference. The event drew attention to pressing residential issues within the institution and provided a platform for students to voice their grievances regarding the current administrative procedures concerning student housing at Dhaka College, Dhaka.
During the press conference, the student representatives—including Salman Sharif, Shaheen Alam, and Maruf Mia—spoke out against the perceived injustices in the campus housing system. The core grievance centered on allegations that the Dhaka College administration favored political influence and external associations over genuine academic need when distributing available accommodations in the student residential halls.
Addressing the journalists gathered at the Dhaka College premises, student spokesperson Salman Sharif detailed the mechanics of the alleged corruption in the allocation process. He stated, "Department-wise applications for hall accommodations were submitted, following which the Dhaka College administration published a list of seat allocations. However, the students who were legitimately recommended by their respective departments were not given seats."
Elaborating on the statistics of the alleged malpractice, Salman Sharif further stated during the press conference that approximately 90 percent of the total residential hall seats were allocated based on recommendations from various ministers and through various political identities. In addition to the politically influenced distribution, he noted that the remaining 10 percent of the seats were assigned under the identities of various social organizations.
In light of these staggering figures and the systemic bypassing of meritorious students, the protesting students formally demanded that the Dhaka College administration immediately cancel the current controversial hall seat allocation list. They insisted that a transparent system must be put in place to ensure that genuinely deserving students receive proper housing on the Dhaka College campus.
Beyond the immediate cancellation of the politically biased seat distribution, the general students who organized the August 25 press conference also highlighted the broader infrastructure challenges facing the institution. To permanently resolve the severe accommodation crisis affecting the student body at Dhaka College, the students strongly demanded the construction of new residential halls.
