Cultural Events and Concerts Face Disruption Across Bangladesh

Cultural events, concerts, Baul musical gatherings, and traditional boat races across Bangladesh have encountered significant disruptions over the past 15 months. The interventions stem from objections and pressure exerted by groups such as Tawhidi Janata and the Imam-Olama Parishad, impacting various forms of artistic expression and public entertainment in multiple regions, including Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, and Netrokona.

Specific incidents highlight the growing pressure on organizers and artists. On August 19, the Kishoreganj district administration cancelled a scheduled concert featuring the band Ashes and singer Nobel following objections raised by the local Imam-Olama Parishad. Just a day prior, on August 18, an attack and subsequent clashes occurred at a cultural event that had been organized by the district police in Brahmanbaria.

Traditional and spiritual gatherings have also been targeted. In Bishwanath, Sylhet, a Baul song gathering held near the shrine of Ibrahim Shah was attacked and vandalized. These incidents occur against the backdrop of international recognition for the tradition, noting that UNESCO included Bangladesh's Baul songs in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity back in 2008.

According to data compiled by Ain Salish Kendra (ASK), there are records of at least 11 cultural events facing direct obstruction under the banner of Tawhidi Janata over the past 15 months. Furthermore, an additional 36 events have encountered disruptions or opposition after being accused of making religious remarks.

Prominent cultural figures have voiced deep concern over the shrinking space for artistic freedom. Mamunur Rashid stated that if there are objections to any cultural arrangements, solutions should be sought rather than shutting down the events outright, questioning why centuries-old cultural practices are now facing obstacles and warning that stopping cultural pursuits pushes the youth toward negative paths and holds the country back.

Echoing these sentiments, Ramendu Majumdar emphasized that such obstacles bring no welfare and that uninterrupted cultural practice must be safeguarded. Ananta Hira of Directors Guild noted that theatre practitioners accustomed to a free environment were forced to cancel the Mahanagar Natyoutsab last year amidst opposition without receiving government assistance, warning that an active group is attempting to silence cultural activities nationwide and urging the current government to find a proper solution.
