Oraon Community Celebrates Traditional Karam Festival in Thakurgaon
The Oraon community in Thakurgaon has celebrated its traditional Karam festival, featuring rituals like planting a Karam branch and day-long fasting by women. The three-day event took place in Panchpirdanga village with participation from various local figures and organizations.
The traditional Karam festival of the Oraon community was recently held in Panchpirdanga village, located within Salandar Union of Sadar Upazila in Thakurgaon district. This culturally significant annual event brings together members of the community to observe deeply rooted ancestral rituals and traditions that have been passed down through generations.
The primary rituals of the festival officially commenced on the night of Friday, September 18. According to the community's traditional practices, the three-day celebration incorporates several distinct ceremonial observances, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs of the Oraon people living in the region.
A central and mandatory ritual of the Karam worship is the ceremonial placement of a branch from the Karam tree. Alongside this core practice, Oraon women observe a strict fast starting from sunrise and continuing until sunset, demonstrating deep devotion and spiritual commitment throughout the duration of the sacred rites.
Bishwanath Kerketta, who spoke regarding the significance of the sacred observances, explained the underlying purpose of the community gathering. He stated that the annual worship is organized every year with the sincere expectation and aspiration of securing protection from various dangers and adversities, achieving a successful and bountiful harvest, and ensuring overall happiness and prosperity for the community.
The observance of the three-day festival saw the presence and involvement of numerous notable individuals and local representatives. Among those associated with the event and the surrounding locality are Shariful Islam Sharif, Abdul Hamid, Imran Hossain Chowdhury, and Tanvir Hasan Tanu.
Additionally, several prominent groups and local entities are linked to the context of the community and the region, including the Oraon community itself, the puja celebration committee, the district BNP, the National Indigenous Council, and the Thakurgaon Press Club.
