Cabinet Approves LNG Imports and Waste-to-Energy Project for Chittagong
Bangladesh has greenlit a proposal to import liquefied natural gas from TotalEnergies to meet urgent domestic energy demands. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs also approved a waste-to-energy project in Chittagong.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has granted policy approval for crucial energy and infrastructure proposals, including the procurement of liquefied natural gas and a new waste-to-energy generation initiative. The high-level meeting took place on September 9, 2026, at the Secretariat in Dhaka, bringing together key government officials to address pressing resource and municipal challenges facing the country.
The session was presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khru Mahmud Chowdhury, who oversaw discussions regarding the nation's immediate resource security. According to the approved directives, the government will move forward with securing vital energy supplies through direct procurement methods to ensure stability across domestic sectors despite ongoing international supply chain disruptions.
The decision to procure additional gas supplies comes in response to unstable geopolitical conditions caused by the ongoing war in the Middle East. To counter these external pressures and secure necessary supplies to meet urgent domestic gas demands, authorities approved a formal proposal allowing the Energy and Mineral Resources Division to source liquefied natural gas directly from the international energy firm TotalEnergies.
Under the finalized schedule approved during the meeting at the Secretariat, a total of eighteen LNG cargoes will be brought into the country over a defined period. These shipments are scheduled to arrive consecutively, with authorities arranging for two distinct cargoes to be imported each month starting from October 2026 and continuing through June 2027.
Alongside the extensive liquefied natural gas procurement strategy, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs also gave its official policy backing to a separate municipal initiative. This secondary approved proposal involves implementing a specialized project designed to generate electricity directly from urban waste specifically within the jurisdiction of the Chittagong City Corporation, coordinated alongside the Local Government Division.
