Cabinet Approves LNG Imports and Chittagong Waste-to-Energy Projects

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has granted vital policy approval for two major infrastructure and energy initiatives aimed at bolstering national energy security and urban waste management. The decisions were officially finalized during a high-level government meeting held at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

The administrative session was presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, who led discussions on critical national priorities. Among the primary approvals was a strategic decision by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division to address urgent domestic gas shortages driven by unfolding geopolitical complications.

To mitigate these supply pressures stemming from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the government approved a proposal to procure liquefied natural gas directly. The supply agreement will be executed through TotalEnergies utilizing a direct procurement method to secure immediate and reliable energy resources for the country.

Under the approved import schedule, a total of eighteen LNG cargoes will be brought into the country over a defined operational period. Shipments are scheduled to commence in October 2026 and will continue through June 2027, with a consistent delivery rate of two cargoes arriving each month.

In addition to the liquefied natural gas procurement plans, the cabinet committee also cleared a separate proposal concerning urban environmental management. Policy approval was officially granted for a waste-to-energy generation project intended to be implemented within the administrative jurisdiction of the Chittagong City Corporation, involving the Local Government Division.
