BRTC Launches Pink Bus Service for Women in Dhaka
The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation has introduced a specialized Pink Bus service featuring female crews across vital capital routes. This initiative aims to address widespread safety concerns and heavy transport dependency among female commuters.
On August 18, 2026, the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) officially launched a special women's bus service, known locally as the 'Pink Bus', in Dhaka. This new transit initiative has rolled out initially with 10 buses operating on important routes throughout the capital city. To ensure a secure and comfortable environment for female passengers, these specialized buses are operated entirely by female drivers and conductors.
The introduction of the Pink Bus service comes in response to significant daily commuting challenges faced by working women in Dhaka. According to a 2026 survey conducted by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) involving approximately 1,000 working women, reliance on public transport remains notably high. The survey revealed that 26% of working women are still dependent on non-AC city buses, while another 17% rely on rickshaws and tempos to get to their destinations.
Furthermore, the financial and physical toll of daily commuting on women is substantial. Research data indicates that female commuters typically spend between 5% and 8% of their total income strictly on transportation. Historical data underscores the long-standing nature of these transit deficits, referencing a 2009 study where 95% of female bus passengers stated that the overall number of buses was insufficient, with 60% specifically demanding more buses, higher operational frequency, and shorter waiting times.
Safety remains one of the most critical issues for women navigating the capital's public transportation network. A comprehensive 2024 study conducted by the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (BRAC JPGSPH) at BRAC University highlighted the alarming prevalence of these dangers. The study reported that an overwhelming 79% of female public transport users in Dhaka had experienced sexual harassment while commuting.
By deploying the new Pink Bus fleet with dedicated female staff on key urban corridors, transport authorities and planners hope to mitigate these harrowing safety statistics. While the initial launch is limited to 10 vehicles, the service represents a targeted administrative step toward improving urban mobility, accessibility, and safety for the city's female workforce.
