BNP and Jamaat Activists Clash Over Land Grabbing in Pallabi
A violent clash erupted between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat over vacant land grabbing in Dhaka's Pallabi Bihari Camp. The confrontations resulted in multiple injuries, including police personnel, and led to the filing of criminal cases.
A series of violent clashes broke out between activists and supporters of the Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami over the control of vacant land in the Pallabi Bihari Camp area of Dhaka. The disturbances began last Saturday evening, starting August 29, and continued through Sunday, plunging the local community into a state of tension and unrest.
According to verified reports, the confrontation drew large numbers of participants from both political factions. Local Jamaat supporters, numbering over a hundred individuals under the leadership of Niyaz Ahmed Khan, squared off against at least one hundred and fifty BNP supporters and activists who were led by Bihari community leader Sadakat Khan Fakku.
The intense physical confrontations resulted in significant casualties on the ground, notably affecting law enforcement personnel attempting to restore order. Inspector (Investigation) Mofazzal/Emdadul Haque of Pallabi Police Station was among ten to twelve individuals who sustained injuries during the outbreak of violence in the residential and camp areas.
In the aftermath of the weekend violence, authorities moved swiftly to initiate formal legal proceedings against those allegedly involved. A total of two separate cases have been officially registered at the Pallabi Police Station in connection with the clashes and related unlawful activities.
Police investigations and subsequent legal filings have specifically targeted numerous individuals for their alleged roles in the unrest. A formal case names twenty-two specific individuals—including Niyaz Ahmed Khan, Suman, and Nasir Uddin Khan Sajal—alongside an additional one hundred to one hundred and fifty unidentified suspects.
As part of the ongoing police crackdown following the twin days of unrest, a suspect identified as Niyaz was placed under arrest by law enforcement. Following his apprehension, Niyaz was produced before the local court, which subsequently ordered that he be remanded to jail custody.
