Bidisha Ershad Denied Bail and Sent to Jail in Dhaka
A Dhaka court has rejected the bail plea of Bidisha Ershad and sent her to prison in a flat sale fraud case. She had appealed against a two-year prison sentence previously handed down by a lower court.
A Dhaka court on September 2 officially rejected the bail petition of Bidisha Ershad and ordered her to be sent to jail. The legal proceedings took place at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, presided over by Judge Md. Shahjahan Kabir, concerning a fraud case involving the sale of an apartment.
Bidisha Ershad had filed an appeal challenging a previous judicial decision that handed her a two-year prison sentence. The initial verdict was delivered on May 20 by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam, who convicted her and also imposed a fine of 10,000 taka in connection with the dispute over the flat sale.
The legal action stems from a complaint filed back in 2008. At that time, a businessman named Mosharraf Hossain Sikdar had lodged the case at Gulshan Police Station, accusing her of fraud related to the property transaction that eventually led to her recent conviction and subsequent legal battles.
Following the earlier conviction, law enforcement authorities arrested Bidisha Ershad on August 25. According to the confirmed details of her apprehension, police detained her at approximately 8:30 in the evening from a restaurant located in the capital's Gulshan area.
During the recent court hearing before Judge Md. Shahjahan Kabir, her legal representation sought her release on bail under the condition of pursuing an appeal. However, the court ultimately denied the request to free her, prompting her legal team to announce plans to challenge the decision in a higher court in pursuit of justice.
