TIB Raises Alarm Over Dhaka WASA's Gulshan Land Project

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over a controversial initiative by Dhaka WASA to construct a residential building on a vast tract of land located in the upscale Gulshan area of the capital. According to the details released by the organization on Thursday, the project involves 114 katha of land that was originally allocated from RAJUK to Dhaka WASA, making it a matter of significant public interest and administrative scrutiny.

The controversy centers around a proposal submitted by a private real estate company to build a residential structure on this prime property. However, TIB has pointed out that this initiative is advancing without following proper administrative procedures, raising serious questions about transparency, institutional accountability, and the potential misuse of vital urban real estate resources belonging to a public utility agency.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, speaking on behalf of the anti-corruption organization, strongly condemned the process behind the initiative. He stated that the move to construct the WASA building on such an important and expansive property in a prestigious area of the capital was undertaken in response to a sole proposal from a politically influential organization. He explicitly termed this action a clear violation of relevant laws and established policy frameworks.

In response to the mounting criticism and concerns raised by Transparency International Bangladesh, the Managing Director of Dhaka WASA addressed the situation. According to the managing director, the proposal is currently in its initial stages. Furthermore, the agency assured the public that no decision is being made under any sort of pressure, and that all subsequent steps regarding the matter will be taken strictly while maintaining the best interests of Dhaka WASA.

The unfolding situation highlights ongoing tensions regarding the management and allocation of public land in Dhaka, particularly when private entities become involved in developing state-allocated properties. As oversight bodies like TIB continue to monitor administrative transparency, the response and future actions of Dhaka WASA regarding the 114 katha plot in Gulshan will remain a critical test of institutional governance and adherence to the rule of law.
