BBC Investigation Exposes AI-Generated Fake Doctors on YouTube in Brazil
A BBC News Brazil investigation has revealed that artificial intelligence-generated fake doctors are being used on YouTube to spread false health advice. The platform has stated that it prohibits medical misinformation and has removed some of the identified channels.

An extensive investigation conducted by BBC News Brazil has uncovered a troubling online phenomenon involving the use of artificial intelligence to generate fake medical professionals on YouTube. According to the findings, these fabricated personas are being deployed across the video-sharing platform to broadcast fraudulent health advice and misleading medical information to unsuspecting viewers in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking regions.
The investigation successfully identified a total of 29 Portuguese-language YouTube channels that were actively participating in this deceptive practice. These specific channels relied heavily on advanced AI technology to construct realistic-looking fake doctors who delivered authoritative-sounding yet entirely fabricated health recommendations, potentially putting viewers at serious risk by spreading medical falsehoods.
Despite the deceptive nature of the content, the scale of the operation proved to be remarkably vast. The investigation revealed that the collective viewership across all 29 of the identified Portuguese-language YouTube channels reached at least seventy million views, demonstrating the alarming extent to which this misleading health content managed to reach the general public.
In response to the discoveries made by BBC News Brazil, representatives for YouTube have addressed the situation regarding the proliferation of fraudulent health advice. The platform's administration stated that medical-related misinformation is strictly prohibited under their existing guidelines and policies.
Furthermore, YouTube authorities claimed that they have already taken direct action against the rule-breaking accounts by removing several of the specifically identified channels from their platform. However, the exposure of these AI-generated medical frauds highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring and preventing the spread of dangerous digital falsehoods online.
