Bangladesh Sees First Private Robotic Surgery at United Healthcare
United Healthcare Services has launched the country's first private robotic surgery service using the Medbot Tumaí system. A 34-year-old patient underwent a successful gallbladder stone removal procedure on August 31 in Dhaka.
In a major milestone for the country's medical sector, United Healthcare Services has officially introduced the first-ever private robotic surgery service in Bangladesh. The groundbreaking medical procedure was carried out on August 31 at the facility located on Madani Avenue in Dhaka, marking a significant technological advancement for private healthcare providers operating within the nation.
The milestone surgery was successfully performed using the advanced Medbot Tumaí Endoscopic Surgical Robot. According to the confirmed details of the procedure, the medical team utilized this cutting-edge robotic technology to operate on a 34-year-old male patient who was suffering from gallstones in his gallbladder. The delicate and precision-driven operation lasted for a total of one and a half hours under the guidance of the attending medical professionals.
The historic deployment of the robotic surgical system at United Healthcare Services was overseen by prominent medical experts in the field. Professor Dr. Rafiqus Salehín and Professor Dr. Shamsad Jahan (Shelly) were among the key medical figures associated with the introduction of this advanced surgical capability. Their involvement highlights the growing adoption of sophisticated technological tools in complex medical procedures within the capital city.
This pioneering medical development comes at a time when a significant number of individuals routinely seek advanced medical treatments abroad. Statistical data indicates that approximately 30 patients travel outside the country every month for medical purposes. This outbound medical travel incurs a monthly expenditure of nearly 30 crore taka, which accumulates to an estimated annual foreign currency outflow of around one thousand crore taka for the nation.
The introduction of the Medbot Tumaí Endoscopic Surgical Robot-assisted procedure at United Healthcare Services received formal regulatory clearance from the Directorate General of Drug Administration. By establishing this domestic robotic surgery infrastructure, the institution aims to provide patients with access to high-precision surgical care locally, potentially transforming the landscape of advanced medical treatments available within Bangladesh.
