Bangladesh Reports Five New Dengue Deaths and 839 Hospital Admissions

Bangladesh continues to grapple with a rising dengue crisis, with health authorities reporting five new deaths attributed to the mosquito-borne disease over the past 24 hours. According to the Directorate General of Health Services, this latest single-day toll pushes the total number of fatalities recorded across the country so far this year to 82.

Alongside the rising death toll, the country has also seen a significant influx of new patients seeking medical attention. Within the same 24-hour reporting period, a total of 839 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals nationwide. This surge brings the cumulative total of individuals hospitalized with the virus this year to 28,929.

A closer examination of the broader epidemiological data provided by health officials reveals extensive geographic spread across various divisions and city corporation areas. During the latest 24-hour tracking period, new hospital admissions were distributed across multiple regions, led by the Khulna division with 159 cases and areas outside the Dhaka division's city corporations with 135 cases. Other notable regional admissions include 117 patients in Barishal, 100 in Chattogram, 91 within the Dhaka South City Corporation, 79 in Mymensingh, 71 in Rajshahi, 61 within the Dhaka North City Corporation, 23 in Rangpur, and 3 in Sylhet.

The cumulative figures for the ongoing outbreak highlight extensive transmission, particularly during the recent summer months. Total dengue cases identified in August alone have reached 13,619, following 9,206 reported infections in July. Geographically, city corporation areas have borne a heavier burden with 20,972 total infections, compared to 7,591 cases recorded outside city corporation boundaries.

Demographic breakdowns released by health authorities indicate varying vulnerabilities among different population segments. The total number of confirmed infections includes significant representation across age groups, notably 4,122 cases among individuals aged 21 to 25 years, and 4,065 cases among those aged 26 to 30 years. In terms of overall gender distribution, male patients account for 61.9 percent of the total, while female patients comprise 38.1 percent. However, mortality figures reveal a contrasting trend, with female fatalities accounting for 59.3 percent of the total deaths, compared to 40.7 percent for male fatalities.

Despite the continuous influx of new patients into medical facilities across the country, ongoing clinical management has resulted in a substantial number of recoveries. Health data confirms that a total of 26,896 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from hospitals after receiving necessary treatment. Meanwhile, healthcare facilities continue to manage active cases, with 1,951 patients currently receiving treatment as inpatients.
