Bangladesh Records 529MW Power Load-Shedding Amid Peak Demand

On August 19, 2026, the power sector in Bangladesh encountered a significant supply deficit during peak hours, resulting in widespread power interruptions across multiple regions of the country. According to official figures released by Power Grid Bangladesh PLC, also known as PGCB, the total demand for electricity nationwide reached an imposing 16,211 megawatts at 7:30 PM during the evening peak hour.
Despite efforts by utility providers to meet the massive energy consumption requirements of consumers, generation and transmission constraints created an unavoidable shortfall. To manage the grid stability and balance the supply against the actual generation capacity, power authorities were forced to implement a total of 529 megawatts of load-shedding across the affected transmission zones throughout the country on that specific date.
The impact of this nationwide power deficit was distributed unevenly across different administrative and utility zones, with certain regions bearing the heaviest burden of the outages. The Mymensingh region emerged as the hardest-hit area by a significant margin, requiring an extensive 256 megawatts of load-shedding to cope with the severe local electricity supply shortage recorded during the evening peak hours.
Other parts of the country also experienced notable disruptions, though on a smaller scale compared to Mymensingh. The Dhaka zone recorded 154 megawatts of load-shedding, while the Comilla zone had to manage 50 megawatts. Additionally, the Khulna zone faced 49 megawatts of power cuts, and the Rajshahi zone reported a relatively lower disruption with 20 megawatts of load-shedding.
Conversely, several major administrative zones managed to escape the evening power restrictions entirely on August 19, 2026. Power Grid Bangladesh PLC confirmed that the Chattogram, Sylhet, Barishal, and Rangpur zones experienced zero load-shedding during the peak hour period, maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply for consumers within those specific regions.
