Bangladesh Health Ministry Reviews Six-Month Performance Amid Measles Crisis

Bangladesh's health sector has marked a critical evaluation of its first six months in office under the BNP government, which officially completed its initial half-year term by August 18, 2026. State Minister for Health MA Muhit addressed the extensive scope and responsibilities managed by the administration during a comprehensive review of the ministry's performance. Describing the administrative scale, MA Muhit noted that the Ministry of Health is a huge ministry, directly affecting the lives of every one of the country's 20 crore people across the entire nation.

The administration faced an immediate and severe public health challenge when a measles outbreak hit Bangladesh within just a month of the government taking office. Reflecting on the crisis, MA Muhit stated that the measles outbreak was a huge shock for the government and the people. The sudden public health emergency required an urgent, coordinated national response to contain the rapid spread of the disease among vulnerable populations, particularly targeting young children throughout the country's various administrative regions.

In response to the escalating health emergency, the Health Ministry launched a massive nationwide immunization drive to protect the population. During this extensive emergency campaign, health authorities successfully vaccinated more than 1.8 crore children nationwide. The critical nature of the vaccination effort was further underscored by epidemiological findings indicating that 90 percent of the children who died from the disease were completely unvaccinated prior to the outbreak.

To support and execute these large-scale public health operations, the ministry relies on a vast network of infrastructure and personnel operating across multiple tiers. The national healthcare delivery system encompasses roughly 500 upazila health complexes, 151-bed hospitals, and five specialized children's hospitals. However, maintaining adequate staffing remains a persistent structural challenge within the system, which typically deploys around 40,000 health workers while simultaneously grappling with 15,000 vacant positions, representing a severe deficit of approximately 40 percent of the required manpower.

Efforts to monitor and strategize around the ongoing vaccination rollout and overall outbreak response continue at the highest levels of government. A high-level meeting specifically addressing the measles issue was convened with the prime minister on August 17, 2026. During these strategic evaluations, health officials reviewed critical coverage metrics, noting that initial efforts achieved 60 percent coverage, which was subsequently scaled up to 90 percent coverage, leaving only 10 percent of the remaining children to be reached as ongoing immunization efforts proceed.
