Bangladesh Crime Data Shows Mixed Trends Six Months Into New Term
Police Headquarters data reveals an increase in specific crime categories including murder and violence against women. Meanwhile, the home minister claims visible improvements in the overall security situation.
Data released by Police Headquarters in Bangladesh has highlighted a deterioration in law and order across specific crime categories during the first six months after the new government took office. Covering the period from February to July 2025, the official figures show an upward trend in several serious offenses, contrasting with the timeline of the administration's initial months in power.
According to the statistics, a total of 21,756 cases were recorded across seven specific crime categories during the February-to-July timeframe. This compares with 21,228 cases registered in the same seven categories during the preceding six-month period, which spanned from August of last year through January of the current year. The data indicates that the overall number of cases increased by 528, representing a rise of nearly two and a half percent.
A breakdown of the figures reveals increases in several high-profile offense types. Across the country, murder cases reached 1,789 during the February-to-July period, showing a slight rise from the 1,780 cases recorded in the previous six months. Similarly, cases involving violence against women and children rose significantly, with 11,665 cases registered in the latest six-month period compared to 10,090 cases in the preceding six months.
Furthermore, incidents targeting law enforcement also saw an upward movement. Police Headquarters data shows that 317 cases were filed regarding attacks on police officers between February and July, up from 275 cases during the prior six-month window. Conversely, certain property and acquisition crimes—encompassing robbery, dacoity, snatching, kidnapping, and theft—experienced a decrease, dropping to 8,485 cases from 9,083 cases in the previous period.
Addressing the security situation, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed claimed that there has been a visible improvement in law and order over the past six months since the government assumed office. At the same time, he acknowledged that some time is still required to fully consolidate these security gains in alignment with the expectations of the general public.
