Among the most vocal critics has been Nationals figure Bridget McKenzie, who seized upon the controversy to draw direct comparisons to her own past ministerial resignation.

Bridget McKenzie publicly criticized the ongoing grant program, reminding observers of the circumstances surrounding her own departure from the Morrison government. Reflecting on her resignation, McKenzie stated, “I resigned my ministerial portfolio because of a perceived conflict of interest. I had an honorary membership that I didn’t know I had from a gun club that I decided under the guidelines to award funding to so women and disabled members could actually go to the toilet on site, a $36,000 grant.” Elaborating further on her departure, she added, “I handed him my resignation, upheld my own personal integrity, but also importantly, the integrity of the system. I’m concerned I’m going to be the last minister in this Westminster system to actually take personal responsibility.”

Away from federal funding disputes, motorists across Australia are grappling with a sharp escalation at the bowser. Retail diesel prices in Australian capital cities have reached their highest recorded averages since April, driven by broader energy market pressures. In state-level fiscal policy, economic debates in Victoria have intensified following the release of an Australia Institute paper concerning the Coalition’s proposed economic measures. The research paper evaluated a Coalition plan to achieve $22 billion in savings via a public service hiring freeze, accompanied by $8 billion each year in government spending cuts, all evaluated against a 2032 cash surplus target. According to the findings, executing this strategy would require cutting 31,700 jobs and could potentially push the state's unemployment rate up to 5.4%.

The fiscal analysis has triggered fierce pushback from Victorian Labor figures. Richard Denniss of the Australia Institute warned of the severe administrative consequences, stating, “That would gut the public service. To claim this could be achieved with a few back office jobs is nonsense.” Echoing these grave concerns, Victorian Labor minister Colin Brooks launched a scathing attack on the opposition’s proposals. Colin Brooks stated, “The Liberals have said that their cuts won’t impact frontline services. This report clearly shows that that’s not the case. These cuts will have a direct impact on hospitals and schools and police and child protection and all of the services the Victorians rely on.”
