Anti-Corruption Commission in Dhaka Paralyzed Amid Five-Month Vacancy
Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission has remained paralyzed for five and a half months following the simultaneous resignation of its leadership. A five-member selection committee was subsequently formed on June 22 to address the ongoing institutional crisis.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has been experiencing a severe paralysis in its official operations and activities. This administrative standstill stems from the commission remaining completely without a functioning commission leadership for a prolonged period of five and a half months, leaving key institutional responsibilities unattended in the capital.
The leadership vacuum at the vital anti-graft body began on March 3, 2024. On this specific date, the former chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen, alongside two serving commissioners, took the collective decision to resign from their respective posts simultaneously, creating an immediate and total leadership void within the organization.
Since that critical date of March 3, the institution has operated strictly without a formal commission structure to guide its mandate. This extended absence of a governing body has effectively brought the organization's regular oversight, investigative functions, and administrative decision-making processes to a complete and prolonged standstill in Dhaka.
In response to the mounting institutional paralysis, formal steps were eventually initiated to resolve the leadership crisis. On June 22, 2024, an official five-member selection committee was formally constituted to oversee the process of finding and recommending suitable candidates to fill the vacant leadership positions at the anti-corruption agency.
This vital five-member selection panel is being headed by Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, a distinguished jurist serving on the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The formation of this committee marks the official administrative effort to restore a functioning leadership commission to the long-stalled anti-corruption body.
