Operation Jackpot Commemorated at Dhaka Cultural Event

A special cultural event was held in the capital to commemorate the legendary heroism of naval commandos during the 1971 Liberation War, specifically focusing on the historic operation known as Operation Jackpot. The observance brought together organizers and participants to remember the bravery of those who fought during the war and the international figures who supported the cause.

The programme took place on Sunday afternoon at the Russian Cultural Centre located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The event was jointly organized by Smriti Ekattor and the Russian House, with active cooperation from the organization 1971 Our Pride.

During the Liberation War, Operation Jackpot was executed on August 15 and 16, 1971, across multiple strategic locations including the ports of Chattogram, Mongla, Chandpur, and Narayanganj. Historical accounts highlight that the covert signal broadcasted for the launch of Operation Jackpot through Akashvani radio was the popular song 'Amar Putul Ajke Jabe Shwashurbari'.

In addition to celebrating the naval commandos, the cultural gathering also honored the sacrifice of Soviet military personnel. Russian soldier Yuri Redkin lost his life on July 13, 1973, while engaged in dangerous operations to remove sunken ships and mines from the port of Chattogram.

The commemoration served as a platform to reflect on the historical ties between Bangladesh and Russia, recalling the joint sacrifices made during and immediately after the 1971 Liberation War. Attendees and organizers paid tribute to both the Bangladeshi naval commandos and the foreign nationals who contributed to the nation's independence and post-war reconstruction.
