AI Cameras Monitor Dhaka-Chittagong Highway and Issue 502 Cases
High-tech automated surveillance has been launched across a 250-kilometer stretch of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Authorities have recorded 502 cases over the past two days.
A sophisticated artificial intelligence camera monitoring and automated fining system has officially commenced operations along the vital Dhaka-Chittagong highway corridor. Spanning an extensive distance of approximately 250 kilometers from Jatrabari all the way to the Chittagong City Gate, the newly introduced digital surveillance network covers critical areas including Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj, and Comilla. This technological upgrade represents a significant shift toward modern traffic management on one of the country's busiest transport routes, aiming to curb violations and enhance commuter safety.
The comprehensive surveillance infrastructure relies on an impressive deployment of 1,427 artificial intelligence cameras strategically positioned across 490 distinct monitoring points along the highway. Specifically, the Comilla section alone features 199 of these advanced cameras operating across its 105-kilometer portion. These devices are managed through a centralized AI camera monitoring data center, which automatically detects infractions and processes violations without requiring immediate manual intervention by traffic personnel on the ground.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed formally inaugurated this advanced 'auto fine system' on Tuesday around 11:00 AM, marking a new chapter in the nation's highway policing. According to official figures released for the period leading up to Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM, the automated system has already generated a total of 502 cases against motorists for various traffic violations.
Anisur Rahman elaborated on the operational adjustments during the initial rollout, noting that the maximum vehicle speed limit was initially fixed at 80 to 85 on Tuesday, but was subsequently increased to 90 on Wednesday. He pointed out that the vast majority of the newly filed cases stem from speeding violations. However, he also observed that drivers are gradually becoming more cautious as awareness of the automated monitoring spreads.
The initiative has also drawn positive reactions from transport associations and supervisory officials. Tajul Islam from the Comilla Bus Owners Association welcomed the technological intervention, stating that the touch of advanced technology from developed countries has now been integrated into their highway system. He emphasized, however, that there is still a need for broader publicity and awareness campaigns among transport workers regarding the new technology to ensure the government's initiative achieves full success.
Mohammad Shahinur Alam of the highway police provided further insight into the long-term vision behind the deployment. He stated that activities involving AI technology cameras on the highway will be expanded even further. According to Alam, the AI cameras are already reducing the tendency to violate traffic laws while strengthening road security and discipline, and the positive impacts are already beginning to show. He stressed that collecting fines is not the sole objective; rather, the primary goal of the initiative is to ensure safe and orderly vehicle movement on the highway, accompanied by ongoing promotional efforts directed at transport workers.
