AI Auto Fine System Cameras Launch on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway

An artificial intelligence-based 'Auto Fine System' has officially begun surveillance operations on the critical Dhaka-Chittagong highway, marking a significant technological upgrade for regional transport infrastructure. The comprehensive monitoring network spans the nearly 250-kilometer highway corridor, incorporating a total of 1,427 AI-powered cameras deployed across 490 designated monitoring points. Specifically, the 105-kilometer section of the highway passing through Comilla alone accommodates 199 of these advanced surveillance units.

The high-tech enforcement initiative was formally inaugurated by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed. Since the activation of the automated surveillance infrastructure, enforcement has been swift, with authorities registering a total of 502 separate cases over the past two days alone. Officials noted that the vast majority of these traffic cases are being generated due to motorists violating established speed limits on the multi-lane highway.

Addressing the implementation adjustments, Anisur Rahman explained that the maximum speed limit for vehicles was initially set at 80 to 85 kilometers per hour on Tuesday. However, the limit was subsequently adjusted upward to a maximum of 90 kilometers per hour on Wednesday. Despite the initial wave of penalties, Rahman observed that motorists and drivers are gradually becoming more cautious as they adapt to the automated monitoring system.

Highlighting the broader implications of the deployment, Tajul Islam remarked that this touch of advanced-world technology has successfully been integrated into the local highway network. Nevertheless, Islam emphasized that further awareness campaigns and publicity are still necessary among transport workers to ensure that the government's safety initiative achieves its intended success.

Reinforcing the long-term objectives of the digital enforcement drive, Mohammad Shahinur Alam stated that operations utilizing the AI technology cameras will be expanded even further across the highway network. Alam pointed out that the presence of these AI cameras is expected to reduce the tendency to break traffic laws while simultaneously strengthening road safety and discipline. Noting that the positive impacts are already beginning to show, Alam stressed that collecting fines is not the sole objective; rather, the primary goal of the initiative is to ensure safe and disciplined vehicle movement while continuing outreach to transport workers.
