Adani plant restarts unit as Rampal halts generation in Bangladesh
Adani's power plant in Jharkhand has resumed generation from its second unit following a technical glitch, while a unit at Bangladesh's Rampal plant has shut down due to technical reasons. The simultaneous shifts have significantly altered power supply dynamics across the border.
Indian energy conglomerate Adani has successfully restarted its second power generation unit, bringing both of its units back online following a technical failure that had previously disrupted operations. According to updates provided on Sunday, the 1,600-megawatt capacity coal-fired power plant in Jharkhand, India, which features two units of 800 megawatts each, began ramping up its power supply by Sunday afternoon.
The restoration of the Adani unit comes after a sudden disruption late Wednesday night when a technical malfunction forced the shutdown of one of the facility's operational units. Prior to that technical failure, production levels at the Indian plant had experienced notable increases, with generation surpassing 1,400 megawatts on Wednesday night. During late-month periods, the facility had previously maintained daytime outputs around 900 megawatts and scaled up supplies to 1,200 megawatts between evening and midnight.
As operations normalized on Sunday, electricity generation from Adani's twin units crossed the 1,000-megawatt threshold by approximately 2:00 PM, following a morning output of roughly 760 megawatts. The supply officially began flowing from the second unit at 12:00 PM noon, according to monitoring data from the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB).
While the Jharkhand facility restored its full two-unit capacity, a contrasting situation unfolded in Bangladesh, where a unit of the Rampal power plant experienced an abrupt shutdown around 11:30 AM on Sunday due to technical complications. This unexpected stoppage at the Rampal facility has immediately cut its overall electricity production in half, compounding regional generation challenges.
Consequently, total output from the Rampal power plant has plummeted below 750 megawatts following the single-unit closure. Broadly speaking, the plant's production has dropped from more than 1,100 megawatts to under 600 megawatts, reflecting a severe contraction in domestic generation capacity.
The cross-border power arrangements are anchored by a long-standing power purchase agreement established in 2017 between the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) and Adani. State entities including the PDB and the Power Grid Company continue to monitor the shifting grid metrics as these international and domestic generation changes take effect.
