11-Foot Python Rescued From Duck Coop in Satkhira and Released
An 11-foot python that ate two ducks was rescued from a coop in Satkhira's Shyamnagar upazila on Wednesday. Forest department officials and local community members safely returned the snake to the Sundarbans.
Residents in Satkhira's Shyamnagar upazila experienced a tense situation on Wednesday when a massive python made its way into a local duck coop located in the Gazipara area of Burigoalini, right beside the Sundarbans. The reptile, measuring approximately 11 feet in length and weighing around 30 kilograms, had managed to sneak into the enclosure, causing significant alarm among the local villagers.
The incident came to light when Zulekha Begum noticed trouble in the duck coop, observing that out of a total of nine ducks, three had managed to escape while the remaining birds were trapped inside. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the python had already consumed two of the ducks and had tightly coiled its body around another duck in preparation for its next meal.
The commotion drew the attention of local resident Moktar Gazi, whose reaction to the terrifying sight of the large predator was immediate and severe. According to accounts of the incident, he began shouting frantically, screaming about the snake before losing consciousness entirely due to the intense shock and panic of the moment.
Despite the frightening discovery, the villagers exercised caution rather than attacking the wild animal. Zulekha Begum noted the importance of restraint during the ordeal, explaining that if anyone had attempted to touch the snake directly, it could have easily slipped away to another location, making a successful rescue operation much more difficult.
Local authorities and conservation groups quickly coordinated a response to handle the situation safely. Members of the forest department, alongside local volunteers from the Community Patrol Group (CPG), rushed to the scene at Gazipara to manage the extraction of the large reptile without causing it any harm.
Mashior Rahman, representing the local conservation efforts, highlighted a positive shift in community attitudes toward wildlife protection following the event. He remarked that in the past, individuals encountering such large snakes would have beaten them to death out of fear, but today people promptly inform the forest department, which ultimately saved the rescued python's life.
Following the successful operation conducted by the forest department and the Burigoalini Forest Station teams, the python was safely transported away from the human settlement. Officials subsequently released the approximately 11-foot serpent back into the wild, specifically within the deep jungle areas of the Kalagachia patrol outpost inside the Sundarbans.
