Zaher Alvi Court Appearance Delayed in Wife's Suicide Case
Actor Zaher Alvi and his mother appeared in a Dhaka court as the submission of the investigation report in the suicide incitement case of his wife was deferred. The court extended Alvi's bail and set September 28 as the new date.
Actor Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, widely known as Zaher Alvi, and his mother Nasrin Sultana appeared before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday in connection with a high-profile legal case filed over the tragic death of the actor's wife, Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra. The proceedings attracted significant attention as the high-stakes judicial process moved forward under the oversight of local authorities in the capital city.
During the court session, the scheduled submission of the official investigation report by the Detective Branch (DB) police could not take place. Explaining the delay to the legal proceedings, court source Abjal Hossain Mridha stated, "Today was the scheduled date for submitting the investigation report of this case. However, as the investigation officer failed to submit it, the court has set the upcoming September 28 as the new date."
Despite the failure to submit the primary investigation report on the designated day, the judicial authority decided to grant an extension regarding the accused actor's legal status. Abjal Hossain Mridha further noted that the court decided to extend the duration of Zaher Alvi's bail up until the newly designated date of September 28, allowing him temporary relief from custody while the inquiry remains ongoing.
Meanwhile, the plaintiff of the case, Kabir Hayat Khan, who is the grieving father of the late Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra, was noticeably absent from the courtroom proceedings. According to court representatives, the plaintiff was unable to attend the scheduled court appearance due to ongoing health complications and illness.
The underlying legal battle stems from a tragic incident earlier this year on February 28, when Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan inside her residence located in Mirpur DOHS. Following the grim discovery, she was rushed to the Kurmitola General Hospital, where attending medical professionals officially declared her dead upon arrival.
In the wake of the tragedy, the victim's father, Kabir Hayat Khan, formally lodged a case at the Mirpur Model Police Station. The formal legal complaint directly accused actor Zaher Alvi and several other individuals of abetment and incitement to suicide, dragging the family into a lengthy judicial investigation that continues to unfold through the Dhaka court system.
