Wild Monkey Sparks Curiosity and Concern in Crowded Rajshahi Neighborhood
A wild monkey appeared in a crowded Rajshahi neighborhood on Sunday, drawing local curiosity and concern. Wildlife officials believe the animal strayed from its troop.
Residents of a crowded neighborhood in Rajshahi metropolitan area experienced a mixture of curiosity and concern following the unexpected arrival of a wild monkey on Sunday, August 23, 2023. The animal was spotted during the midday hours near the Debishingpara Mosque area under the jurisdiction of Boalia Police Station, quickly attracting the attention of local residents who gathered to observe the unusual visitor.
The wild animal has been lingering around the residential premises of valiant freedom fighter Shahjahan Ali Barjahan. According to Mr. Barjahan, the presence of the primate was first noticed when his grandson spotted it sitting just outside the front door of their home while heading out for his afternoon studies. Since that initial sighting, the monkey has been constantly moving about the neighborhood, frequently jumping between the exterior walls of buildings and leaping from the rooftop of one house to another.
Local residents have been actively engaging with the animal by providing it with various food items. Eyewitness accounts from the scene indicate that people living in the Debishingpara Mosque neighborhood have offered the wild monkey cucumbers, bananas, and ladyfingers to eat as it wanders through the residential alleyways and rooftops.
Regarding the behavior of the animal, local resident Shahjahan Ali Barjahan noted that while the monkey has not launched any direct physical attacks or caused substantial damage to property, it does exhibit defensive tendencies. He stated that whenever someone approaches its immediate vicinity or gets too close to its food, the primate bares its teeth in an attempt to frighten people away.
Wildlife authorities have provided context regarding the unexpected appearance of the primate in a densely populated urban environment. Jahangir Kabir, a wildlife inspector, explained that the animal is believed to have strayed away from its original troop before wandering into the locality. Furthermore, inspector Kabir confirmed that this same monkey was previously sighted a few days earlier in the Binodpur area of the city.
