West Bengal Women Protest Alleged Denial of BJP's Welfare Funds

Thousands of women have taken to the streets in Kolkata and various regions across West Bengal to stage demonstrations against the BJP government. The public outcry stems from allegations that eligible participants have not received social security funds that were promised to them by the political party.

Prior to the legislative assembly elections, the BJP had made specific financial commitments to the female population of the state. The party explicitly promised that women who were already receiving the existing state-level welfare payments would be transitioned under the 'Annapurna Yojana' scheme.

Under this pre-election BJP proposal, the beneficiaries were promised that their monthly financial assistance would be doubled from 1500 rupees to 3000 rupees. However, the failure to deliver these enhanced funds has now triggered widespread demonstrations by thousands of women across the region.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously introduced a social security scheme in West Bengal specifically designed for adult women, known widely as the 'Lakshmir Bhandar' project. Under this established initiative launched by Banerjee's administration, women regularly received 1500 rupees every month.

The current unrest highlights the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal surrounding women-centric welfare schemes and financial promises made during election campaigns. As the protests continue in Kolkata and beyond, demonstrators are demanding accountability regarding the disbursement of the social security funds.
