Ways to Purify the Heart According to Islamic Teachings
Islamic teachings place immense importance on purifying the heart as the driving force of human well-being and actions. Scholars and texts highlight several key methods based on the Quran and Hadith to free the heart from spiritual ailments.

In Islamic tradition, the purification and spiritual cleansing of the heart are regarded as vital elements for overall human health and righteous conduct. According to verified teachings from the Quran and Hadith, the state of the heart determines the condition of the entire physical body. This fundamental principle is underscored by a statement from the Prophet (PBUH), who said: 'Beware, in the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound and corrected, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Beware, it is the heart.'
Addressing the spiritual healing of mankind, Allah the Almighty states in Surah Yunus, verse 57: 'O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.' Building upon this foundation, Islamic sources outline specific methods to cleanse the inner self from spiritual diseases and attain ultimate divine guidance and mercy.
Among the primary ways to cultivate a purified heart is the frequent remembrance of Allah, known as Zikr. The Quran declares in Surah Rad, verse 28: 'Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.' Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) compared the person who remembers his Lord to the one who does not, likening them to the living and the dead. To maintain this connection, the Prophet (PBUH) frequently offered the supplication: 'Allahumma musarrifal qulub, sarrif qulubana ala ta'atik.'
Another essential aspect of spiritual purification involves sincere repentance from sins, coupled with the regular remembrance of death, which the Prophet (PBUH) described as the destroyer of worldly pleasures. Visiting graveyards is also encouraged to soften the heart, bring tears to the eyes, and remind individuals of the afterlife. Additionally, keeping righteous company plays a crucial role, as the Prophet (PBUH) noted that a person follows the religion and character of their close friend.
Finally, safeguarding one's morality is emphasized through lowering the gaze and protecting modesty. Allah instructs in Surah Nur, verse 30: 'Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them.' Through these concerted spiritual practices, a believer can achieve true inner purification and draw closer to divine grace.
