Waterlogging at Sorishabari College Playground Sparks Health Risks
Sorishabari College faces severe waterlogging issues at its only playground, creating health hazards and disrupting student activities. Established in 1967, the institution now accommodates approximately 3,500 students.
Established in 1967, Sorishabari College has long served as a prominent educational institution in Bangladesh, catering to a large body of students. Currently, the college accommodates approximately three and a half thousand students who are enrolled in various higher secondary and undergraduate programs. Despite its academic significance and long history, the campus is grappling with a severe infrastructure problem that directly affects the daily lives and well-being of the student body.
At the center of this crisis is the institution's sole playground, which is situated at a notably low elevation compared to the surrounding areas. Because of this geographical disadvantage, even a minimal amount of rainfall leads to immediate and severe waterlogging. Instead of draining properly, the rainwater remains trapped for extended periods, turning the designated recreational zone into a stagnant water body that is entirely unusable for the students.
The prolonged stagnation of water has transformed the campus playground into a breeding ground for various health and safety hazards. According to confirmed reports from the area, the persistent water accumulation has significantly escalated the presence of mosquitoes, harmful insects, and even snakes. These dangerous conditions pose an immediate threat to the health and safety of the faculty members, staff, and the approximately three and a half thousand students who walk the campus grounds every single day.
The ongoing environmental degradation has completely halted all sorts of physical education and extracurricular sports activities on the campus. Students find themselves deprived of a functional recreational space, which is critical for their routine physical routines and overall student life experience. The inability to access the grounds has not only disrupted athletic events but has also caused widespread frustration among the student community regarding the neglect of essential campus facilities.
Voicing their deep concerns over the deteriorating situation, students Ahsan Habib, Monjurul Islam, Nahida Yasmin, Tahira Akhtar, and Amirul Ehsan Shaheen jointly articulated the collective frustration of the student body. They stated, 'Because water remains pooled in the field throughout the year, playing sports is out of the question, and there is no way to even go near the field. Our only place for physical and mental development is being ruined through neglect today. Because the field has been waterlogged for a long time, sports are being disrupted. We strongly demand that the field be quickly filled with soil to make it usable again.'
