Thyroid gland disorders manifest in different ways depending on whether the gland produces too little or too much hormone. In cases of hypothyroidism, the thyroid creates very little hormone, whereas in hyperthyroidism, it produces an excessive amount. These hormonal imbalances directly affect several critical bodily functions, including metabolism, body temperature regulation, and heart rate.

One of the most noticeable symptoms associated with thyroid conditions is a sudden or unexplained change in body weight. When a person has an underactive thyroid, the condition slows down the body's metabolic rate, which can lead to unexpected weight gain. Conversely, an overactive thyroid can cause unexplained weight loss, even when the individual maintains a normal or even increased appetite.

Energy levels and temperature regulation are also frequently disrupted by thyroid issues. Individuals experiencing hypothyroidism may feel persistently tired and fatigued, even when they are getting adequate sleep. Additionally, an increased sensitivity to cold is recognized as a common physical sign associated with an underactive thyroid gland as the body struggles to maintain proper internal warmth.

Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating the body's heart rate, meaning any dysfunction in the gland can impact cardiovascular rhythms. Furthermore, both an under-active or an over-active thyroid can disrupt the normal growth cycle of human hair, potentially leading to noticeable changes in hair health and density across the scalp and body.

The health of human skin and its ability to retain moisture are also directly influenced by thyroid hormones. When hormone levels fall outside the normal range, individuals may notice changes in their skin condition. Finally, digestive processes are heavily impacted; an underactive thyroid can result in constipation, while an overactive thyroid frequently leads to frequent bowel movements or diarrhea.
