UK Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Imported Eggs Leaves One Dead

Health authorities across the United Kingdom have launched an urgent investigation following a severe salmonella food poisoning outbreak that has resulted in one confirmed death and hundreds of illnesses. According to official data released by public health bodies on 18 August 2026, a total of 207 cases have been identified over the past year. The outbreak involves a specific and identical strain of salmonella, prompting widespread concern and heightened surveillance from national food safety regulators.

The devastating toll of the outbreak has placed a heavy burden on the national healthcare system, with more than a third of those affected requiring hospital care for their symptoms. Furthermore, the severity of the infections is highlighted by two patients who have developed serious blood poisoning as a direct result of the bacteria. Public health officials are closely monitoring the hospitalized patients as the investigation into the nationwide distribution of the contaminated food items continues.

Geographically, the vast majority of the infections have been concentrated within England, accounting for 199 of the total 207 documented cases over the past year. Regional breakdowns show that London has been particularly heavily impacted, registering 47 cases, while Yorkshire and Humber has recorded 38 cases. Investigators have also traced 24 specific cases that are directly linked to various food businesses utilizing imported eggs in their commercial operations.

Hannah Charles, speaking on the ongoing public health crisis, stated: "We're working with Food Standards Agency and other public health agencies to investigate a salmonella outbreak that may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK." Reinforcing this focus, the UK Health Security Agency noted that "At this time there is no identified link to UK-produced eggs or poultry," helping to narrow the scope of the complex supply chain investigation.

As the joint investigation by the UK Health Security Agency and the Food Standards Agency continues, officials have issued targeted guidance for vulnerable populations. Jacquelyn McCormick advised that "Infants, young children, pregnant people and older adults should only eat runny or raw eggs if they have a British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain egg assurance scheme." Authorities are urging the public and food businesses to remain vigilant regarding egg sourcing while the investigation into imported produce progresses.
