Two Arrested in Chattogram for Extortion Posing as Police and Journalists
Five individuals entered a residence in Chattogram's Halishahar area posing as law enforcement and journalists to demand extortion money. Police subsequently arrested two suspects following a 999 emergency call.
An extortion incident occurred in Chattogram city involving individuals posing as police officers and journalists to target residents. According to the verified details, the incident took place in the Shyamoli Residential Area located within the jurisdiction of the Halishahar Police Station. Five individuals initially entered a residential house by identifying themselves as members of the police force before subsequently claiming to be journalists.
During the intrusion into the residence, the perpetrators conducted a search inside the home. They proceeded to record video footage of a 55-year-old woman along with her two daughters-in-law. Following the search and recording, the group demanded a ransom or extortion sum amounting to one lakh takas from the occupants of the house.
When the residents refused or failed to provide the demanded sum of one lakh takas, the suspects escalated their actions by carrying out vandalism inside the house. The situation drew the attention of local residents living nearby, who attempted to intervene by coming forward to help the victims. However, the perpetrators responded to the neighbors with threatening behavior.
As the confrontation escalated, a call was placed to the national emergency service number 999 to report the situation. Responding to the emergency call, police personnel arrived at the scene. Law enforcement forces successfully apprehended two individuals during the operation at the location.
The two arrested suspects have been identified as 40-year-old Sakhawat Hossain and 46-year-old Md. Mainuddin. During the operation, police seized a walkie-talkie and a mobile phone from the possession of the detained suspects. Other individuals allegedly involved in the incident include Md. Zahid, aged 30, Md. Mostafiz, aged 36, Babul, aged 36, and Zainal Abedin Mandal.
Following the events at the residence, the 55-year-old female victim formally filed a case at the Halishahar Police Station regarding the extortion and vandalism. The investigation by local authorities continues into the actions of the group within the Shyamoli Residential Area.
