Two Arrested for Theft During Flash Floods in Nepal's Dolpa District
Two men have been arrested in Nepal's Dolpa district for allegedly stealing from three homes taking advantage of a flash flood and landslide. A court has granted a seven-day remand for the suspects.
Two individuals have been taken into police custody in Nepal following a series of residential thefts that occurred during a natural disaster. The incidents took place in the Kalang area, which is situated within the Dolpobuddha Rural Municipality of Dolpa district. According to local reports, the theft suspects exploited the chaos caused by sudden flash floods and landslides that struck the region, targeting three separate houses while residents were vulnerable or displaced by the severe weather conditions.
Law enforcement authorities identified the two detained suspects as 37-year-old Tilak Bhandari and 32-year-old Nishan Bhandari. Following their apprehension, police conducted searches and successfully recovered a substantial amount of stolen property from the suspects. The seized items include 700 pieces of yarsagumba, a highly valued Himalayan fungus, along with 148,650 Nepalese rupees in cash. In addition to the currency and yarsagumba, authorities recovered mobile phones, a smartwatch, a power bank, and various tools that were reportedly used to facilitate the break-ins.
Following their arrest, the two men were presented before the Dolpa District Court to face formal judicial proceedings regarding the alleged burglaries. The court reviewed the initial police findings and subsequently granted a seven-day remand for Tilak Bhandari and Nishan Bhandari. This authorized detention period allows law enforcement agencies to conduct further investigations into the thefts committed during the flash flood and landslide emergency in the Kalang area.
