Sylhet Boat Race Set for Aug 28 After Dispute Resolved

A traditional boat race scheduled to take place on the Sunai river in Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet, Bangladesh, is officially set to be held on August 28, 2026. The upcoming competition, which forms part of the region's cultural heritage, faced initial opposition from a section of local residents over concerns regarding potential environmental and agricultural damage.

The dispute arose when some area inhabitants voiced strong objections, citing fears of riverbank erosion and potential destruction to newly planted rice seedlings and other croplands along the riverbanks. Amid these growing tensions, an opposing faction circulated banners under the banner of 'Towhidi Jonata' (Lauta Union), while debates and opposing views were widely shared across social media platforms regarding the planned competition.

Speaking on the matter, Umme Habiba Majumdar noted that the boat race is a traditional rural sport that would not be stopped by objections, confirming that local stakeholders sat down to resolve the issue and that the event will proceed under the supervision of the boat race competition organizing committee. She added that concerns over crop lands and riverbank erosion were the primary factors that had escalated the situation.

Aminul further defended the event, stating that the boat race has historically been held on the Sunai river to preserve the traditions of their ancestors. Aminul alleged that certain individuals were spreading misinformation and inciting farmers, as well as presenting misleading information on social media to oppose the traditional tournament.

To de-escalate the tense atmosphere, the local administration and prominent local figures stepped in to mediate between the conflicting parties. Delwar Hossain explained that the situation was successfully managed through discussions with both sides, ensuring the event will go ahead on the 28th, while noting that some individuals had previously leveraged the local residents' fears of erosion and crop damage to viral effect.

With the discussions concluding successfully, the local organizing bodies and administration have paved the way for the traditional sports event to take place without further hindrance. The community-led resolution has ultimately cleared the path for the traditional Sunai river boat race to proceed as planned later this month on August 28.
