Sylhet Boat Race Celebrates Tradition Despite Earlier Tensions

A traditional boat race competition was successfully held on the Sunai River, located in Beanibazar, Sylhet, drawing enthusiastic crowds from the surrounding areas. The event, which serves as a vibrant display of local culture and heritage, brought together villagers and visitors who travelled from distant places to witness the spectacle.

Organized by the youth society of Bahadurpur Gangpar alongside the Touhidi Janata, the event initially faced complications due to objections raised by local groups. However, through timely local mediation, these complex issues were successfully resolved on August 24, paving the way for the competition to proceed smoothly.

The climax of the event featured the final round of the race, which showcased prominent local vessels. In a unique turn of events during the finale, the competing boats known as 'Hakaluki Bagh' and 'Pagla' chose not to race side by side. Instead, they completed their respective runs separately, concluding the day's athletic exhibitions.

Addressing the cultural significance of the gathering, Advocate Emran Ahmad Chowdhury spoke during the proceedings to emphasize the deep-rooted nature of the sport. He stated that boat racing is an integral part of the heritage and culture of traditional Bengal, explicitly noting that it is not an act against religion and holds no conflict with religious values.

Spectators at the riverbank expressed immense joy and appreciation for the festivities throughout the day. Sharing her experience of the gathering, Misbah Monzur remarked that boat racing is part of our heritage and mentioned she came specifically to watch it, observing that villagers were thoroughly enjoying the competition alongside attendees from distant regions.
