A traditional boat race took place on the Sunai River, located in Lauta Union under Beanibazar Upazila of Sylhet, on Friday afternoon, August 28, 2026. The event drew spectators from both the local area and distant locations who gathered along the riverbanks to witness the competition unfold in the afternoon sun.

The lively rural sporting event was organized by the local organizing committee, alongside the Bahadurpur Gangpar Youth Society. Large crowds of villagers attended the afternoon gathering, thoroughly enjoying the festive atmosphere and the traditional boat racing spectacle on the Sunai River.

Among the notable attendees at the riverbank was Advocate Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, the Member of Parliament for the Sylhet-6 constituency. He went to the location specifically to observe the traditional boat race and join the local residents in witnessing the annual competition.

Spectators shared their enthusiasm for the cultural significance of the gathering. Misbah Monzur, an attendee who traveled to view the races, noted the deep cultural roots of the sport, stating that boat racing represents a cherished tradition that drew people from far and wide to enjoy the community event together.

However, this year's gathering marks a definitive conclusion for the local tradition. As part of the terms of a compromise agreement reached regarding the river, a final decision has been made stating that no further boat races will be organized on the Sunai River starting from next year.
