Strong Currents Leave BIWTC Ro-Ro Ferry Hamidur Rahman Drifting
A Ro-Ro ferry carrying 15 vehicles drifted downstream after suffering mechanical failure in strong currents. The vessel is currently anchored near the No. 7 ferry terminal at Daulatdia.
A Ro-Ro ferry operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) faced severe navigational difficulties on Monday, September 7, 2026, after encountering powerful river currents. The incident began at approximately 9:45 AM when the Ro-Ro ferry 'Hamidur Rahman' departed from the Paturia ferry terminal in Manikganj, heading across the river toward the Daulatdia terminal in Rajbari.
According to verified reports from the scene, the vessel successfully crossed the middle section of the river before running into intense currents. These extreme hydrodynamic conditions placed immense stress on the vessel, triggering a mechanical failure that left the ferry unable to maintain its scheduled course or power its way to the designated docking point at the Daulatdia terminal.
As a direct result of the propulsion issues combined with the fierce river current, the 'Hamidur Rahman' began drifting uncontrollably downstream away from the terminal area. Mohammad Salauddin confirmed the unfolding situation as the disabled ferry drifted significant distances down the waterway before temporary stabilization could be achieved by the stranded crew.
At the time of the incident, the ferry was heavily laden with a total of 15 commercial and private motor vehicles. The cargo stranded on board includes eight passenger buses, four trucks, and three private cars, leaving numerous commuters and freight transporters stranded on the drifting watercraft in the middle of the river system.
Current status updates indicate that the situation is being actively managed by transport authorities to secure both the vessel and its vehicular cargo. The crippled Ro-Ro ferry is currently holding in a stationary, anchored position situated just beneath the No. 7 ferry terminal at Daulatdia, awaiting specialized assistance.
To address the emergency and safely resolve the immobilization of the 'Hamidur Rahman', an IT rescue ship has been officially dispatched to the location. Maritime teams are working to execute recovery protocols and ensure the safe handling of the ferry, the vehicles, and all individuals still aboard the vessel at the Daulatdia ghat.
