State Minister Visits Qatar for LNG Supply Discussions Amid Disruptions

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit arrived in Qatar on 18 August 2026 as part of a high-level delegation led by Foreign Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman. The official visit is focused on addressing critical liquefied natural gas supply issues that have recently impacted bilateral energy arrangements between the two nations.

The diplomatic mission comes in the wake of significant logistical challenges in the Middle East energy corridor. Following the outbreak of the war involving Iran, the strategic Strait of Hormuz was closed, directly obstructing regular maritime traffic and severely impacting liquefied natural gas shipments originating from Qatar.

As a consequence of the maritime route closure, energy operations have faced unprecedented hurdles. Qatar Energy was compelled to officially declare a 'force majeure' regarding its scheduled liquefied natural gas deliveries, citing extraordinary circumstances beyond its operational control that prevented the fulfillment of regular export commitments.

The current supply crisis compounds earlier procurement hurdles faced by Bangladesh's energy sector. Back in March of this year, state-run Petrobangla was forced to acquire two spot cargo shipments at varying high costs to meet domestic demand, with prices recorded at 28.28 US dollars per MMBtu for one cargo and 23.8 US dollars per MMBtu for the other.

Furthermore, broader structural supply concerns have been looming over the nation's energy imports for the current year. According to a July report, scheduled liquefied natural gas supplies from Qatar to Bangladesh for 2026 could potentially drop by nearly half, heightening the urgency of the current high-level diplomatic discussions in Doha.
