Severe Wildfires Sweep Across Europe as Belgium Activates EU Aid

Destructive wildfires burned across several European nations on Saturday, heavily impacting Belgium's largest nature reserve and regions in south-western France. The widespread blazes forced significant emergency responses and evacuations, stretching firefighting resources across borders as extreme heat continues to grip the continent.

In Belgium, the historic High Fens nature reserve located in Wallonia faced severe devastation, with approximately a third of the reserve consumed by flames. The rapidly advancing disaster prompted authorities to order residents to evacuate two nearby villages situated close to the German border.

Belgium formally activated the European Union's civil protection mechanism to combat the emergency. International support quickly arrived to aid local crews, including two Swedish water-bombing aircraft, alongside helicopters dispatched from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands to fight the fires from the air.

On the ground, emergency personnel worked tirelessly to contain the advancing threat. Nicolas Yernaux addressed the critical situation, stating, "There is a risk that the fire could reach homes, but we are deploying all available resources to protect them." Gregory Melotte detailed the intense tactical efforts, noting, "We managed to calm the fire coming from the plain, to prevent it from spreading into the fir forest. We still succeeded in our mission, but it's not over yet." Melotte also described the volatile environment, adding, "The flames are coming towards us, the wind has shifted twice, once in our favour, once against us."

Meanwhile, the crisis extended beyond Belgium into south-western France, where a major wildfire in Landes forced 650 residents to evacuate their homes. More than 500 firefighters were deployed to the Landes region to tackle the ferocious blazes.

Additional forest fires were also reported across Croatia, Spain, and Serbia since Friday. The widespread outbreak follows confirmation from the European Union's climate monitoring service, Copernicus, stating that western Europe experienced its hottest June-to-July period on record.
