Russia and Kazakhstan officially signed an engineering, procurement, and construction contract on Thursday for the development of Kazakhstan's very first nuclear power plant. The high-profile agreement represents a major milestone in energy cooperation between the two neighboring nations, establishing the foundational framework for the landmark atomic energy project.

The formal signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the prominent Eastern Economic Forum hosted in the Russian city of Vladivostok. Representatives from key industry entities gathered at the venue to execute the historic accord, which sets the stage for the construction of the massive infrastructure undertaking in Central Asia.

The crucial contract was formally executed between Atomstroyexport, a subsidiary of the Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, and the enterprise Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants. Under the terms of the newly established agreement, Rosatom is slated to lead an international consortium and will take on the extensive responsibility of overseeing the full project cycle from inception to completion.

The upcoming nuclear facility, designated as the Balkhash plant, is planned to comprise two distinct power units. These units will be equipped with advanced, Russian-designed VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactors, which are engineered to meet stringent modern safety and efficiency standards. Together, the two power units will deliver a combined generating capacity of 2.4 gigawatts.

As preparations for the monumental construction project move forward, preliminary work is already actively taking place on the ground. According to project disclosures, comprehensive engineering surveys are currently underway at the designated plant site to evaluate local conditions and ensure the technical viability of the location.
