Rumors Surface Over Awami League Leader Misbah Uddin Siraj at Border
Social media reports claimed former Awami League organizing secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj was detained at the Kanaighat border. However, local law enforcement and border guards have confirmed they have no record of any such detention.

Unverified reports circulating widely on social media on August 25, 2025, claimed that Misbah Uddin Siraj, a prominent political figure and former central organizing secretary of the Awami League, had been detained at the Dona border area in Kanaighat, Sylhet. The rumors quickly gained traction online, prompting inquiries from the public and journalists regarding the actual whereabouts and legal status of the high-profile politician.
Misbah Uddin Siraj is a well-known political and legal personality in the region, having previously served as the central organizing secretary for the ruling Awami League. In addition to his prominent role within the political party, he also held the significant professional position of government prosecutor at the Sylhet Judge Court before the political landscape of the country underwent a dramatic shift in the late summer of the previous year.
The political standing of Siraj and many of his party colleagues changed drastically following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. In the wake of the administration's collapse, Misbah Uddin Siraj went into hiding to evade capture and prosecution. According to verified records, multiple criminal cases have been filed against him across various jurisdictions since the historic political transition took place last year.
In response to the intense social media speculation concerning the alleged border detention, local authorities moved quickly to investigate the validity of the claims. Aminul Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kanaighat Police Station, formally addressed the rumors by stating that the local police department possesses no official information regarding any such detention occurring within their jurisdiction.
Furthermore, local law enforcement officials actively coordinated with paramilitary border security forces to verify the authenticity of the viral reports. The officer-in-charge confirmed that after making direct inquiries with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), authorities found no truth to the claims that the former government prosecutor had been intercepted or detained at the border.
As a result of the official clarifications provided by the Kanaighat police and the border guard communications, the rumors circulating online have been firmly discredited. Meanwhile, Misbah Uddin Siraj continues to remain in hiding as law enforcement agencies maintain their pursuit of the politician in connection with the multiple pending cases filed against him since August 2024.
