Rights groups discuss draft laws on Human Rights Commission and enforced disappearance
A dialogue titled 'National Human Rights Commission Act and Enforced Disappearance Act (Draft): Promise vs. Reality' was held in Dhaka. The event was jointly organized by Nagorik Coalition and Voice for Reform.
A high-profile public dialogue focusing on crucial legislative reforms took place on Wednesday at the BDBL Building in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka. The event was centered around the theme 'National Human Rights Commission Act and Enforced Disappearance Act (Draft): Promise vs. Reality', bringing together prominent public figures, activists, and reform advocates to critically analyze the proposed legal frameworks.
The discussion was jointly organized by two advocacy platforms, namely Nagorik Coalition and Voice for Reform. The organizers aimed to scrutinize the strengths and potential loopholes in the draft legislation concerning human rights protection and the prevention of enforced disappearances in the country.
During the session, Nabila Idris, a former member of the disappearance-related commission, presented the keynote paper. Her detailed presentation laid the groundwork for the subsequent discussions, highlighting key aspects and critical areas of concern within the drafted laws under review.
The dialogue was moderated by Fahim Mashrur, co-coordinator of Voice for Reform. Under his facilitation, participants engaged in an open exchange of views regarding the practical implementation and theoretical framework of the proposed legislation.
Numerous notable personalities attended the dialogue, including Tajul Islam, Noor Khan Liton, Shahidul Alam, Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, Mujibur Rahman Monju, Tajnuba Jabin, Fahad Chowdhury Dipu, Syed Hasib Uddin Hossain, Faisal Mahmud, Zarif Rahman, and Arman Hossain.
Representatives from various organizations also participated in the deliberations, including AB Party, Bangladesh Rashtra Sangskar Andolon, Daily Woda, and Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP). Their involvement underscored the broad-based interest in ensuring robust and accountable human rights laws for the nation.
